MADIKERI: The state government will provide Rs.25 lakh for the genealogical study of eighteen Kodava language natives. This was announced by the Social Welfare Department and Backward Classes Minister Kota Srinivasa Pujari in Kodagu.
He was speaking after inaugurating an exhibition at a gathering of 18 Kodava-speaking groups organised by the Kodagu Heggade community organisation on Sunday at Kodagu Heggade Community Hall in Bittanagala.
At the government level, there is a rule of giving reservations through genealogical analysis to the most unrecognizable ethnic groups. A request from an organisation prompted the minister to make this announcement.
"As per the proposal made by Virajpet MLA KG Bopaiah in the high level, Rs 5 crore will be donated for the development of Ainmane of Kodava speaking communities along with five acres of government land to construct a community hall," said Bopaiah. Based on the Sadashiva report for internal reservation, the Government will consider this. Accordingly, this issue will be discussed with the CM," the minister assured.
Mangaluru Lok Sabha Constituency MP Nalin Kumar Kateel while inaugurating the book stalls said that the problem of Kodavas has increased due to their dwindling numbers geographically and population-wise. The MLA KG Bopaiah has already demanded at the government level that through the development of the Kodava-speaking community Ainmane (ancestral house with a clan) development support be given by the government so that language and culture can be promoted, and he said the government would take action. The contribution of Kodavas to the defence field of the country is immense. Kodavas defeated Tipu, who invaded Kodagu state 32 times, as he recalled.
MLC Mandepanda Suja Kushalappa said that unity in the community is crucial in order to obtain government privileges.
Former State Advocate General Ajjikuttira S Ponnanna said that although the government has been planning to study Kodava genealogy for 6 years, it has been of no use. The study of genealogy, reservation, and political reservation is subject to legal struggle under the constitution. Head of the History Department of Hampi University, Tambada Vijay Poonachcha, delivered a speech.
President of the Kodava-Speaking Communities Association Dr Mechira Subhash Nanaiah, and others were present.
