Deputy shoots person who cops say fled RPB traffic stop
ROYAL PALM BEACH — A Palm Beach County sheriff’s deputy shot a female in the leg early Sunday during a traffic stop in Royal Palm Beach after deputies say she tried to flee in a stolen pickup truck.
The sheriff’s office said deputies had stopped the stolen U-Haul pickup on the 200 block of Parkwood Drive about 4 a.m. As they were detaining the male driver, the female passenger “slid into the driver’s seat and fled the scene,” according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The unidentified female was found with the truck about an hour later at the nearby Royal Inn Hotel on Royal Palm Beach Boulevard. There, deputies say the female struck a deputy with the vehicle as she attempted to flee once more.
The deputy fired at the vehicle, authorities said. The truck drove north but crashed 7 miles away, striking the fence of a house at the intersection of Royal Beach Beach and Persimmon boulevards, according to the news release.
The female was arrested while fleeing on foot and was taken to a hospital to be treated for the gunshot wound, after which she was expected to be transferred to the county jail, the sheriff's office said. The deputy was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The incident is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, with assistance from the sheriff’s office and the State Attorney’s Office. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave, a standard move while deputy-involved shootings are investigated.
The sheriff’s office did not release the name of the female or the deputy Sunday.
