India Take 2-0 Lead, Retain BGT

Well, that ended in the blink of an eye, didn’t it? The second day ended with Australian players sporting big smiles after reaching 61/1 in their second dig. The Test was nicely poised, potential for a thrilling finish. India would have been preparing for a 200-plus chase. And then the scenario changed dramatically. Ravindra Jadeja began the demolition job on the 2nd day itself when he got rid of Usman Khawaja but the majority of it came in the morning session when he ran through Australian batting order like a hot knife through butter. He finished with figures of 7/42 as the tourists crumbled against spin to be bowled out for 113 before the session would end. Not to forget, Ravichandran Ashwin was the bowler who kick-started the collapse when he removed overnight batter Travis Head on 43. He finished with three wickets.

India’s chase began with the dismissal of KL Rahul to Nathan Lyon in the second over itself. However, Rohit Sharma batted with a positive mindset, hitting boundaries and his entertaining innings of 31 was cut short thanks to a mix-up with Cheteshwar Pujara resulting his run out. Virat Kohli was looking good but he was stumped for the first time in his Test career and Shreyas Iyer played a couple of good shots before perishing himself.

However, Pujara continued to bat the way he does. And saw through a successful chase, hitting the winning boundary as India overhauled the target in 26.4 overs to finish with 118/4 and win by six wickets. They take a 2-0 lead in the four-match series and also retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

India Take 2-0 Lead, Retain BGT

Test to be bowled out for 113 in 31.1 Overs. Jadeja finished with figures of 7/42 – his career-best figures while Ravichandran Ashwin took 3/59. Australia resumed the day with 61/1 but suffered a batting collapse to lose nine wickets for the addition of just 52 runs. India needed 115 for a 2-0 lead. The procession began with Ashwin getting rid of dangerman Travis Head on 35 and then the rest followed their teammate back to the dressing room in quick succession. Jadeja took two in two for a double wicket-maiden that included the scalps of Peter Handscomb and Australia captain Pat Cummins.

The match was nicely poised after Head and Marnus Labuschagne counter-attacked India bowlers in the final session of the second day. Head, who opened in place of injured David Warner, looked in supreme touch and played some good strokes to put the Indian bowlers under pressure. Head remained unbeaten on 39 and took Australia to 61/1 in 12 overs at stumps on Saturday. Australia have a crucial 62-run lead over India now and they will look to bank on it and set a big total for India on the third day in New Delhi. The number 1 ranked Test batter Marnus Labuschagne is also in the middle with 16 runs in his account so far.

Australia lost the crucial wicket of Usman Khawaja late on Day 2. After being heaved over deep mid-wicket by Khawaja, Ravindra Jadeja struck on the very next ball, as the left-handed batter swept straight to a sharp short leg moving to his left.

Meanwhile, for India, left-arm spin all-rounder Axar Patel top-scored with his second consecutive fifty in the series as the hosts’ were bowled out for 262 in their first innings. At one point, it looked like Australia will have a huge lead, as India were 139/7 in 50.5 overs.

But Axar slammed 74 off 115 balls and shared an important 114-run partnership off 177 balls with Ravichandran Ashwin, who made 37 off 71 balls, for the eighth wicket to bring India on the threshold of taking a lead.

Despite the stand, they missed out on the lead by a solitary run as Australia wrapped up the Indian first innings within 3.3 overs of taking the second new ball. For Australia, premier off-spinner Nathan Lyon starred with 5/60, including taking four wickets in the morning session.

Patel believes that stopping Australia to 220-250 on day three of second Test.

‘The faster we bowl them out, the better it is for us. If we can stop them to 220-250, then it would be a good target for batting on third or fourth day. For that, we will have to bowl well as the pitch is getting slower. We will have to work hard to stop them to that total as it won’t be easy to fetch wickets immediately. You will have to bowl consistently in good areas to make things happen,” he said in the post-match press conference.
