Report economic frauds for effective probe, urges Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal
Goyal meets Merchants’ Chamber of Commerce & Industry members
KOLKATA: Citizens coming across any kind of economic fraud should report it to police without hesitation so that the force could tackle the crimes more effectively, urged Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal.
Interacting with members of Merchants' Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Saturday, Goyal said a whistleblower would not require to lodge a formal complaint and that police would welcome any kind of information on frauds. "While the ED is the nodal agency dealing with money laundering, everyone functions within their domain. We take action against any fraud under our domain," said Goyal. Economic offences and cybercrimes were fast replacing traditional crimes, he said. "But our teams are tasting success in tackling such crimes. There were now multiple means to report a fraud, like emails or calling specialized numbers, like 1090."
Goyal felt it was important to reach out to the public. "We are engaging with social groups and residents of various ages on social media and and through media campaigns. We are reaching out to youths in the port area through programmes, such as Nabadisha and school contact programmes. Programmes, like Pronam, Kiran and Tejaswini, are directed to empower and enlighten people of various ages," said an officer. He also pointed out that efforts were on to tackle road encroachment. " Traffic discipline will not come overnight, but we are improving," said Goyal.
