Portsmouth police looking for suspect in July homicide

Police in Portsmouth are searching for a suspect in connection with a shooting that happened last summer.

In a news release, police said that Jamar L. Hilliard, 35, is being charged with the second degree murder of 37-year-old Charkela Y. Branch. On Monday, July 25, 2022, at 1:46 a.m. officers responded to the 10 block of Jenkins Place after there were reports of a shooting. After arriving, police found a man and woman with life-threatening injuries. They were transported to a hospital for treatment, but Branch later died of her injuries.

Hilliard is also being charged with shooting into a dwelling, grand larceny of a firearm, obstruction of justice, concealing evidence and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
