Jacob Escobedo, a 12-year-old Franklin Middle School student, was killed when he was struck by a vehicle on Tuesday.

The tween was less than two weeks from his 13th birthday.

According to police, Jacob was struck by a school bus. The Wayne Police Department and Wayne-Westland Community Schools did not respond to phone calls seeking comment.

A GoFundMe started to pay for funeral costs, called "Jacob Escobedo," raised over twice its $7,000 goal in less than 24 hours.

"Jacob was a wonderful student and friend who was always smiling," Wayne-Westland Community Schools superintendent John Dignan said in a letter to families Wednesday. "He was also creative and smart and was working on a fantasy book. Jacob will be missed by his teachers and classmates."

Jacob is the third Wayne-Westland student involved in a pedestrian-vehicle crash while trying to travel to or from school in recent months. Two other students were injured by crashes police say involved districted adult drivers.
