Time for a two-term mayor

Tory Resigns, Feb. 11

John Tory might have some regrets about his decision to seek a third term as Toronto’s mayor. Tory now seems to be testing the political waters concerning his impending resignation.

Throughout this controversy, the issue of a mayoral two-term limit has never been raised. While Tory blew away his closest competitor in October’s election, his victory can be partly attributed to a personality cult, developed around longer serving leaders — discouraging potential successors from running.

Setting a mayoral two-term limit will help reinforce our democratic values and reduce the threat of growing authoritarianism.

Given that Tory has worked overtime to fulfil his first two mandates, Torontonians are split on his impending resignation. With that said, the time has come for Tory to pass the torch to someone else, catch up on some R and R, and spend more time with his family, as he promised.
