In light of the ongoing tension along the Line of Actual Control, the cabinet approved the recruitment of seven new battalions of the Indo-Tibetan Border police on Wednesday. These battalions are primarily intended to protect the India-China border (LAC). 

The additional battalions will significantly increase security along the LAC by manning 12 staging camps and 47 new Border Out Posts (BOPs).

A total of 9,400 men will be enlisted into the ITBP for the extra seven battalions and the sector headquarters, according to sources with knowledge of the situation. On border posts, the SHQ and additional battalions will help fill in the gaps. These battalions and the sector headquarters ought to be completely operational by 2025–2026.

The construction of office and residential buildings, the acquisition of land, and the acquisition of arms and ammunition would all cost an estimated 1,800 crore. The annual budget for wages, food for employees, and other recurring expenses will be close to 963 crore.

The idea was adopted after the cabinet meeting, which was presided over by prime minister Narendra Modi. The ITBP, which was founded in the wake of the 1962 Chinese invasion and has about 90,000 personnel, is responsible for protecting the 3,488-km-long Line of Actual Control (LAC), which runs along India's eastern border.

Brief border clashes between Chinese and indian forces occurred in december in the tawang sector of Arunachal Pradesh, which beijing also claims. There haven't been any fights since soldiers participated in hand-to-hand combat in the Ladakh valley of Galwan. That encounter resulted in the deaths of twenty indian soldiers and four Chinese soldiers.
