Next mayor should renounce ‘strong-mayor’ powers

Tory Resigns, Feb. 11

It was a foregone conclusion that the “strong-mayor” powers would eventually backfire.

John Tory promised Toronto that he would never abuse the powers he had secretly asked for prior to the mayoral election because he was an honest man of character.

Of course, the very fact that he concealed his deal with Premier Doug Ford became exhibit A as to the lack of Tory’s integrity and character.

His resignation over concealing an affair he carried on throughout his campaign is exhibit B.

Tory’s stunning resignation throws the city’s governance into turmoil, but it could be a golden opportunity to end the threat of this legislation ever being invoked.

I hope every candidate in the upcoming mayoral race will vow to forswear the use of the strong-mayor powers. The only beneficiary of this undemocratic power is Ford.
