If someone wins the $67 million Mega Millions drawing on Valentine's Day, it will be the first significant jackpot won on that holiday in the history of the game, according to megamillions.com. Previously, Richard Gusefski of Endicott, New York, claimed $1 million when he matched five numbers on Feb. 14, 2014, and Rondal and Eumeka Saxton of Los Angeles collected $505,010 a week after the drawing.
According to Mega Millions' site, Gusefski stopped by Weis Markets for groceries and bought a ticket for the then $139 million jackpot. No one matched all five numbers plus the Mega Ball, and the jackpot rolled over. But Gusefski managed to take home a lump sum of $661,800, the site states.
The Saxtons said they were on their way to a Valentine's Day concert when they stopped by a Stop and Save in Baldwin Park for coffee, a story on megamillions.com states. The couple matched five numbers but not the Mega Ball to win more than half $1 million. “Some people want to be a millionaire," the story says, "but we’re just happy being a ‘thousandaire!’”
Mega Millions drawings are held at 11 p.m. EST Tuesdays and Fridays.
Powerball drawings are held at 11 p.m. EST Monday, Wednesday and Saturdays.
