Who serves Rochester's best fish fry? Nominate your favorite

Tracy Schuhmacher Sean Lahman
Rochester Democrat and Chronicle

The Democrat & Chronicle is on a mission ― once again ― to find Rochester's best fish fry.

In 2019, we asked D&C readers and social media followers to share with us their favorite fish fries, and boy, did they respond. More than 200 places were nominated and the recommendations stretched from Batavia to the Finger Lakes to Wayne County.

We published the restaurants that got the most votes and, after a taste test, we selected the winner: Crabby Dan's Grill in Mendon.

The D&C is holding a March Madness-style competition to find Rochester's best fish fry.

Sadly, Crabby Dan's has closed (while we have not reached the owner, Google lists it as permanently closed and its telephone number is disconnected). That means it's time to find a new winner.

This time, we're leaving the decision up to you, Rochester's fish fry aficionados, by having a March Madness-style bracket challenge.

The fish fry at Crabby Dan's Grill in Mendon won the 2019 poll, but Google says it is permanently closed.

How it will work

Here's how it will pan out: The top finishers from 2019 will get an automatic bid. Some brackets will be determined by me in order to highlight some high-quality, but lesser-known spots. The remaining at-large spots will be determined by your nominations.

  • Nominate your favorite fish fry at: https://dandcpoll.survey.fm/rochesters-best-fish-fry, or point your camera to the QR Code.
  • Nominate only one restaurant. Nominations are limited to restaurants. Churches and nonprofits will be featured in a separate story.
  • Nominations begin Wednesday, Feb. 15, and end at 11 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19.
  • No stuffing the ballot box: Vote once per email address, please.
