Prep highlights: Livingston County's grip on KLAA West girls basketball broken

For the first time since the inception of the Kensington Lakes Activities Association in 2008-09, a Livingston County girls basketball team won’t win a division championship.

Salem finally broke Livingston County’s grip on KLAA West titles Tuesday night, clinching the outright championship with a 51-43 victory over Novi.

Even if Salem lost, the Rocks would’ve clinched because Howell, the only team with a chance of catching them, lost 37-36 in overtime to Northville.

Since the beginning of the league, Hartland has won or shared seven West titles, Brighton five and Howell three. The only team outside the county to get a title share was Grand Blanc, which was co-champion with Hartland in 2009-10.

Salem is 11-2 in the West with one game left. Howell, Northville and Brighton are tied for second at 9-4.

Howell could have shared the title with Salem by beating Northville, then beating the Rocks Friday night at home.

Instead, Northville ended the Highlanders’ five-game winning streak by beating Howell for the first time since the KLAA formed. Howell was 12-0 against the Mustangs during that time.

Molly Deurloo scored 16 points and grabbed nine rebounds, while Gabby Piepho had 15 points and five rebounds for Howell (15-5 overall).

Brighton 48, Plymouth 25

Mary Copple had 18 points, five assists and three steals for Brighton.

Sophia DeAngelis added 10 points and Makena Smith grabbed five rebounds for the Bulldogs.

Hartland 44, Canton 38

Liv Linden and Sarah Rekowski each had 13 points, while Lexi Moyer had 10 for Hartland (6-7 KLAA West, 11-9 overall).

Jackson 40, Pinckney 33

Audrey Wardlow had 20 points and five rebounds, while Kailey Lambert had eight points and five assists for Pinckney.

Morrice 47, Livingston Christian 39

Audrey Johnson scored 15 points, Allie Johnson 11 and Paige Green eight for Livingston Christian (7-10).

Boys basketball

Brighton 60, Plymouth 49

Brighton set itself up for a first-place showdown Friday night at Canton, jumping out to a 19-5 lead after one quarter.

Brighton and Canton are tied for first place in the KLAA West at 10-2 with two games remaining. The Bulldogs will get the West’s berth in the KLAA championship game if they win, because they will have swept the season series with Canton.

Ashton Tomassi scored 21 points and grabbed five steals, Trevor Viau had 16 points, and Eddie Millington had eight points and nine rebounds for the Bulldogs (16-3 overall).

Jackson 64, Pinckney 44

Brayden Doyle scored 16 points and Caden Carlson 10 for Pinckney.

Lake Fenton 74, Charyl Stockwell 45

Henry Munkres had 17 points and seven assists, Kian Rooney 10 points and nine rebounds, and Louis Perri nine points, eight rebounds and four steals for Stockwell.

Hockey

Howell 3, Northville 2

Tanner Sauve’s second goal of the game with 5:50 remaining extended Howell’s winning streak to a season-high three games.

Hayden Sturos scored Howell’s first goal, while Marco Wolf and Cade Katlin had two assists.

Boys bowling

Brighton 27.5, Northville 2.5

Joey Coleman rolled a 233 game and a 436 series for Brighton.

Girls bowling

Brighton 26, Northville 4

Kaitlyn Daniels rolled a 168 game and a 310 series for Brighton.
