Johnson Elementary School student injured by sharp object in another student's backpack

An ambulance was called to Johnson Elementary School at the end of the school day Monday to treat a student who was cut by a sharp object when hit by another student’s backpack, principal Georgianna Dawson wrote in an email to parents.
The injured student received immediate medical attention from staff, Dawson wrote, and was then seen by emergency responders.
The injured child “is receiving the care needed and will be fine,” said the email, shared Tuesday with the Coloradoan by Poudre School District.
"At dismissal time Monday, a fourth-grade student was swinging a backpack and hit another fourth-grade student, causing injury," PSD spokesperson Emily Shockley told the Coloradoan, via email. "The student received immediate medical attention from school staff and medical personnel who responded to the school."
Fort Collins Police Services was made aware of the incident, Officer Brandon Barnes said. Because both students are under the age of 10, no criminal charges would be applicable even if they were found to be warranted.
A multi-tool was found in the backpack and collected by the school, Shockley wrote.
"Situations involving student safety are always taken seriously, and it is being addressed with the people involved," Shockley wrote.
PSD is not able to share additional information because of privacy laws, she said.
