Reject strong mayor powers

Tory Resigns, Feb. 11

Voters in Toronto overwhelming supported John Tory’s election to a third term as mayor.

The “strong mayor powers,” were never a part of his platform. So voters did not vote for them, neither did they vote for a mayor who would be able to win a vote with the support of only one-third of the council.

Whoever emerges as the next mayor of Toronto should declare that she or he has no intention of using those powers. This city needs to return to democratic, not autocratic rule.
