COIMBATORE: In the wake of two back-to-back murders over gang rivalries, the Coimbatore city police have launched a special drive to curb rowdyism.
City police commissioner V Balakrishnan said they had identified six gangs. “The six gangs tried to establish their powers in their localities. Most of the members of the gang were below 25 years. A special team led by assistant commissioner of police Parthiban has been working to nab one of the gang leaders, identified as Gowtham of Kamarajapuram. We will take stringent action against rowdyism,” said Balakrishnan.
Panic was created among the residents after the two rivalry murders happened in the city in full public view on Sunday and Monday.
“We have maintained the details of 153 people who are history-sheeters and our teams are closely monitoring the activities of the history-sheeters who were working for some rowdy gangs. During the special drive, Saravanampatti, Selvapuram and Ramanathapuram police arrested eight rowdy elements for possession of deadly weapons and were planning to commit dacoity,” said police commissioner Balakrishnan.
He added that the police were planning to conduct a meeting with a section of youths and their parents in Kannappa Nagar, Rathinapuri, Moormarket, Ammankulam and Sivananda Colony. The parents would be informed about the problems the family would face if their sons became members of a gang.
