BARUIPUR: Four persons, including two children, were killed and at least five others were injured after a hydrogen gas cylinder used to pump the gas into balloons exploded at a village fair in Joynagar, around 50km from the city, on Sunday night. Two of the injured are still battling for their lives.
The explosion killed Abir Gazi (8), Shahin Molla (12), Qutubuddin Mistry (35) and the balloon seller Muchiram Mondal (35) while five others, including Mondal's brother-in-law, are still in hospital.
Police said the accident happened at 10.10pm at Bantra village, on the first evening of the two-day annual fair. Witnesses said most of the revellers were leaving the fair when the explosion happened near the exit.
As pandemonium broke out, locals and cops struggled to find enough transport to rush the injured to hospital. "This a religious fair held every year at the same place. We are checking how banned hydrogen gas balloons were being sold at the fair," said a senior officer of Baruipur police division.
