Stephen Lam/Getty ImagesSlack, the corporate chat service owned by San Francisco tech behemoth Salesforce, is ditching its headquarters for good.
The San Francisco-based communications company will be leaving its 230,000-square-foot headquarters at 500 Howard St. by the end of the month and moving into the neighboring Salesforce Tower in an effort to consolidate office space and save money, continuing the trend of Bay Area tech companies sacrificing office space. The news was first reported by Fortune.
A Salesforce spokesperson confirmed the closure in a statement to SFGATE on Monday. “This is part of what we announced in January,” the spokesperson said. “We are bringing all employees together in Salesforce Tower.”
Slack and its parent company Salesforce have experienced a particularly tumultuous few months, even amid the broader industry cuts. Last December, nearly two years after being bought by Salesforce, Slack CEO Stewart Butterfield announced his departure from the company. (His exit came just days after Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor announced his exit. Taylor is now teaming up with Google executive Clay Bavor to launch an AI startup.)
Weeks later, Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff decimated its “ohana,” holding a two-hour meeting with employees a day later that he recently told the New York Times he regrets. (However, he told the Times he does not regret the cuts, saying that the layoff packages are some of the most generous ever provided. He also did not express any remorse for calling out newer remote employees for being less productive.)
The 230,000-square-foot, 10-floor headquarters was inspired by the Pacific Crest Trail, the legendary hike stretching from the California-Mexico border all the way to the Washington-Canada border. (Business Insider also noted that one of the floors has a boba lounge.)
Fortune reports that workers will leave the premises by Feb. 24.
