ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Magic has waived longtime guard/forward Terrence Ross and guard Patrick Beverley, President of Basketball Operations Jeff Weltman announced Sunday.

What You Need To Know

  • Orlando has waived its rights to swingman Terrence Ross and guard Patrick Beverley

  • After they clear waivers, they will become free agents

  • Ross played parts of seven seasons with the Magic

  • Beverley was acquired in the trade Feb. 9 that sent Mo Bamba to the Lakers

Terms of the deals were not disclosed. Upon clearing waivers, both players will become unrestricted free agents and will be eligible to sign with any NBA team. Under NBA rules, the one exception is Beverley cannot re-sign with the Lakers because they just traded him this season.

For the Magic, the move opens two roster spots. It is unclear whether they will look to add any players.

“We want to thank Terrence (Ross) for all of his contributions during his time here in Orlando,” Weltman said. “We truly appreciate his professionalism and veteran leadership. We are excited this agreement will give him an outstanding opportunity, and we wish he and his family all the best.”

According to ESPN, Ross is expected to sign with the Phoenix Suns, who last season lost to the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals and last week acquired All-Star Kevin Durant in a trade with the New Jersey Nets. The addition of Ross would help replenish their depth after the Suns’ trade with the Nets and boost their 3-point shooting.

Ross has played for the Magic for five full NBA seasons and parts of two others. He appeared in 349 career games, including 55 starts, and averaged 12.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.7 assists in 26.1 minutes per game. Ross, nicknamed the Human Torch during his Orlando stint, ranks sixth on the Magic’s all-time 3-pointers-made list with 697.

Ross was the only player remaining on Orlando’s roster from its last team to make the playoffs in 2019-20. His playing time with Orlando had dropped this season, and he had fallen out of the rotation as the Magic worked to develop their young players.

Ross, 6-foot-7 and 205 pounds, has played in 42 games (nine starts) this season with Orlando, averaging 8 points, 2 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 22.5 minutes per game. He scored in double figures 12 times and 20-plus points twice, including a season-high 29 points on Oct. 22 against the Boston Celtics.

Beverley was acquired by Orlando from the L.A. Lakers with cash considerations and a future second-round draft pick from the Denver Nuggets, as part of a four-team trade on Feb. 9 that sent center Mo Bamba to the Lakers. He has played and started in 45 games this season with the Lakers, averaging 6.4 points, 3.1 rebounds and 2.6 assists in 26.9 minutes per game. Beverley did not appear in any games with Orlando.
