Radio Prison: Catching the right signal in Rajkot
The radio station operates out of Rajkot Central Jail
RAJKOT: The community radio station set up inside the Rajkot Central Jail has transformed the lives of 1950 inmates. Launched in December 2021, it has become a virtual lifeline for the prisoners who eagerly await the programmes that go on from 7 am till noon and from 3pm to 6pm daily.
“Radio Prison has changed the prison environment. We wish inmates on their birthdays through radio announcements and even celebrate Independence Day and R-Day by encouraging them to sing songs and recite poems. They have found a new purpose,” said Banno Joshi, the jail superintendent.
The station airs pre-recorded programmes like prayers and Bollywood hits.
When an inmate is set to be released, he is invited to the radio station to tell us about his experiences and future plans so that other inmates are inspired to bring about a positive change in their lives.
