St. Clair's Audrey Schindler looks to pass during a game earlier this season. She was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week on Thursday.

It's becoming more difficult to find skilled post players in basketball. Fortunately for the St. Clair girls team, Audrey Schindler fits that description.

The junior was voted Blue Water Area Athlete of the Week on Thursday for the week of Jan. 30-Feb. 4. She recorded a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double in the Saints' 47-42 win over Fraser on Jan. 31. She also finished with five assists, two steals and one block.

The Times Herald recently caught up with Schindler to learn more about her.

Times Herald: How long have you been playing basketball?

Audrey Schindler: I was on my first travel team in fifth grade with a bunch of girls from our area in St. Clair. But I've been going to camps at the high school since I was five.

TH: What makes you such a talented player?

Schindler: Definitely my teammates. They're always pushing me to get better and they have my back on the court. We jell very well altogether. And I definitely use my height to my advantage to get easy shots and easy rebounds — whatever I can. Coach (Darren Pietrykowski) and coach (Eric Lohr) are always giving me advice, pushing me and always wanting to make me a better player all around.

TH: Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Schindler: I have to go with a softball player. Her name is Jocelyn Alo. She's an old softball player from (the University of Oklahoma) and now plays professionally. She's such a hard worker, always knows how to be a leader and takes people under her wing.

TH: What do you enjoy doing outside of playing basketball?

Schindler: I like playing (travel and high school) softball, I do that a lot. Also, hanging out with my friends and going shopping with them.

TH: What goal do you have for the rest of this season?

Schindler: As a team goal, to finish out strong through the MAC tournament and see how far we can get. And definitely to win districts this year. That's big on our checklist. I think we can do it and I believe we've got what it takes. I want to make this season as memorable and unforgettable (as possible) for our seniors.
