Santiago Mejia/The ChronicleThe Houston Texans continued to add to head coach DeMeco Ryans's coaching staff Sunday as they reportedly hired former 49ers offensive passing game coordinator Bobby Slowik as their offensive coordinator
Slowik, 35, sports an 11-year resume as an NFL assistant, with stops in Washington and San Francisco. He previously worked as a offensive assistant and defensive quality control coach with the 49ers before working as the passing game coordinator in each of the last two seasons. San Francisco finished No. 6 in points scored in 2022, and Slowik worked in tandem with head coach Kyle Shanahan as the 49ers posted a 13–4 record with three different starting quarterbacks.
Sunday's hire of Slowik marks the latest in a recent flurry of additions to Ryans's staff. Houston agreed to a deal with Cardinals defensive line coach Matt Burke on Friday, with Burke slated to serve as the team's new defensive coordinator. The Texans then made a second offensive hire Sunday, with former Vikings assistant QBs coach Jerrod Johnson set to join Houston as its new QBs coach, per the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.
Ryans' staff is now coming together in the two weeks since he was named Houston's new head coach. Ryans is familiar with Slowik, as Houston's coach spent the last six seasons as a defensive coach with the 49ers. Ryans was San Francisco's defensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022, seasons in which the 49ers finished No. 9 and No. 1 in points allowed.
Houston fans will now look to Ryans and his new staff to bring the Texans back to relevance in 2023 and beyond. Houston enters next season following a trio of campaigns outside the playoffs, with a combined record of 11–38–1.
