In one of his books, the former William Hill PR man Graham Sharpe mentions a Scottish punter who was around back in the 1980s by the name of Bill Brown.
rown knew he was dying and asked the priest at his upcoming funeral to tell mourners they should back a horse called Grey General at Wolverhampton. The horse duly won at 4/1 in a handicap chase, and I’m sure it had a helping hand from Brown from above.
Jumps racing ended at Wolverhampton in 1993, and with no divine inspiration to help me out, I’ve had mixed results betting on the all-weather there in recent years.
But now and then, you can get a bit of value at Dunstall Park, and at 10/1 or thereabouts, I’m quite keen on Fernando Rah each way in this evening’s eight-runner Top Odds Every Day With BetUK Handicap (7.0).
Trained by Clive Cox, he registered his first win at this course a couple of years ago, and while he was disappointing when last seen at Newcastle eight months ago, a mark of 95 gives room for improvement, provided his trainer has him in good shape.
The main racing today comes from Newbury, but I’ll sit out the Grade Two Betfair Exchange Game Spirit Chase (3.0) without a bet, with likely winner Greaneteen as short as 4/9 in the early betting yesterday.
I fancied him in the Tingle Creek but he lacked a bit of a spark and finished second behind Edwardstone, with favourite Shishkin back in third.
This looks more straightforward, however, and with 15lbs in hand on official ratings over Funambule Sivola, this looks like a straightforward penalty kick.
Funambule Sivola was last in the Tingle Creek, which doesn’t inspire confidence, but he has a bit of talent, winning this race last year, and was a very good second to Energumene at 40/1 in last year’s Champion Chase. Nevertheless, his career does seem to be going backwards, and he has something to prove at this stage.
In terms of prize money, the feature race today is the Betfair Hurdle Handicap (3.35 Newbury), and if I can get anywhere near the forecast price of 16/1, I’ll take Master Chewy each way.
With a rating of 124, Nigel Twiston-Davies’s gelding is bottom of the weights here with 10st 4lbs, and that’s not too harsh for his handicap debut considering he went very close in his latest two novice hurdles.
He was also set to win an Ascot hurdle before but took a tumble at the last obstacle, so he’s been a bit unlucky not to get off the mark so far.
It’s interesting to see him go the handicap route, and Twiston-Davies is no stranger to this contest with such horses, winning three times with Al Dancer (2019), Ballyandy (2017) and Splash Of Ginge (2014). The other eye-catcher is Emmet Mullins’s Filey Bay, which is in great shape at present and has won two handicaps in a row, but bookmakers are taking no chances and have chalked the Fame And Glory gelding up at 3/1 in the early markets.
Paul Nicholls’s Hitman is the 7/4 market leader for the Grade Two Denman Chase (2.25 Newbury) at the time of writing, but that’s a little short for me considering he arrives here after a flop in the King George in which he reportedly bled.
Nicholls reckons he’s in great shape now – but at 11/4, I’m siding with Eldorado Allen for Joe Tizzard under Brendan Powell.
Fourth in the King George at 18/1, he won this race last year, and while he’s never quite made it at Grade One level, he’s got a couple of Grade Two victories to his credit and usually gives you a good run for your money.
Fanion D’estruval is also worth a mention. He seems to enjoy tackling longer distances lately, and Venetia Williams’s eight-year-old shaped well in third in the Rowland Meyrick Chase at Wetherby last time out.
We’ve some decent action at Warwick, too, and Stolen Silver looks nailed on for the opening five-runner Virgin Bet Warwick Castle Handicap Chase (1.30), although he’ll be short, no doubt, and I’d say I’ll be lucky if I get him at even-money.
Trained by Sam Thomas with Adam Wedge booked to ride, he won the Grade Two Silver Trophy Chase Handicap at Cheltenham last April rated 143. He’s raced well since, most notably when runner-up to Midnight River at that course when last seen on New Year’s Day off 150.
He’s up 4lbs for this race but he’s got a bit on hand on all known form and can justify his place at the head of the betting.
