Ludhiana: As scattered dairy units have failed to make alternative arrangements, civic officials have issued one last warning to the owners to not dump cow dung and other dairy waste in Municipal Corporation (MC) sewer lines. Dairy unit owners have been given a window of 15 days to curb this activity, or else they will have to face action. Cow dung flowing into MC sewer lines or directly into the Buddha Nullah is a major issue for the civic officials, as has a major impact on Rs 650 crore Buddha Dariya Rejuvenation project.
“Dairy owners are directed to stop dumping of waste in MC sewer lines within 15 days, or their sewer connection will be snapped, units will be sealed and cattle too will be lifted from the site. There are over 150 scattered dairy units in different parts of the city,” said one official.
The officials claimed that the owners were directed to make required arrangements to deal with cow dung and other dairy waste inside their units only and the waste should not be dumped in the MC sewer lines.
“Apart from choking MC sewer lines, cow dung also affects machinery installed at sewer treatment plants (STP) of the MC and ultimately adds to the
pollution in
Buddha nullah. Eventually, the owners of dairy units situated in residential areas will also have to shift their unit from the site,” said a source.
The matter was also discussed during the meeting held recently to review the progress under the project to clean Buddha Dariya.
MC Commissioner Dr Shena Aggarwal claimed that the state government is working on the project to clean Buddha nullah.
Apart from acting against the scattered units, steps are also being taken to tighten noose around the dairy unit owners in the two dairy clusters situated in the city, including Tajpur road dairy complex and Haibowal dairy complex.
The concerned departments have also been directed to take action against the dairy units from where cow dung or waste is being dumped in the nullah from outside the MC limits.
