Woman saves herself from 'sexual harassment' by jumping out of moving bus in Purnia
PATNA: In a shocking incident, a 30-year-old woman jumped off from a moving bus to save herself from alleged sexual harassment in Bihar's Purnia in the wee hours of Wednesday.
Police found the woman lying in an injured condition on National Highway-31 post-midnight and admitted her to the district hospital.
The incident took place around 1.30am only a few metres away from Dalkhola post, when the woman was traveling in a bus from Vaishali to Siliguri in West Bengal.
When the bus reached Purnia during the midnight, some unknown men had boarded the bus and she did not like their behaviour and seeing those men she got scared and panicked and jumped from the bus, Purnia superintendent of police (SP) Aamir Jawaid said.
He told this newspaper that the police have been probing the incident and scrutinizing the CCTV footage of the nearby areas to identify those men.
“We are investigating the case from all angles and trying to track the bus she was travelling. The statement of the woman was recorded in the hospital at 1.14pm on Wednesday. She is a resident of Darjeeling and a teacher by profession. The woman told the cops that she had gone to Vaishali on January 22 due to some work,” said Jawaid.
The SP added, “On Tuesday, she took the bus from Vaishali for Siliguri at 2.30pm. During midnight, when the bus reached Purnia, four men boarded the bus. In the statement, the woman said that she did not like the behavior of those men and jumped out of the window of the moving bus.”
The police patrolling team led by Vijay Kumar Yadav found the woman in an unconscious state and took her to the Baisi primary health care centre, from where she was referred to the Sadar Hospital for better treatment. The doctors claimed that she suffered serious head injury.
According to police officials, the woman could barely speak Hindi and was fluent in Nepali. In the statement to the police, she said she took the extreme step due to the fear of the unruly men, who boarded the bus in Purnia.
