Coimbatore corporation to felicitate 10 ‘best performing’ councillors

COIMBATORE: The city corporation has chosen two best performing councillors from each of the five zones and would felicitate them during the Republic Day celebrations on Thursday.
From the east zone, DMK councillor and the zone chairman Ilakkumi Izhamselvi (ward 52) and Congress councillor G Naveenkumar (ward 5) were selected, while DMK councillors K Praveenraj (ward 42) and K Selvaraj (ward 72) were selected from the west zone.
Similarly, from the north zone, DMK councillors A Radhakrishnan (ward 18) and S Saranya (ward 30) were chosen. DMK’s E Ahamed Kabir (ward 86) and R Karthikeyan (ward 100) were chosen from the south zone. Karthikeyan is also DMK’s floor leader in the council. From the central zone, CPI’s Prabha Raveendran (ward 48) and DMK’s R Karthikeyan (ward 100) were selected.
Ilakkumi Izhamselvi said she improved garbage segregation at source level in her ward. “I reached out to school and college students to create sensitization on the issue. Now, I am concentrating on tree planation. The goodwill I earned among residents of my ward helped me get the award.”
Prabha Raveendran said she attended to people’s complaints as soon as possible. “I go to the spot once I get a complaint and take steps to address it immediately. People feel that I am one among them.”
Corporation commissioner M Prathap said the councillors were shortlisted based on a predefined criterion. “Ten points were allotted for attendance in the council meeting, five for taking up meaningful discussions and 10 points each were allotted for their participation in Namakku Naame Thittam and solid waste management. Also five points for their role in retrieving the corporation lands and improving revenue collection, while five points were given for the goodwill among the public.”
