Thiruvananthapuram: The government has come up with an order granting state youth commission chairperson Chintha Jerome the salary arrears amounting to Rs 8.50 lakh. The order issued by
sports and youth affairs secretary M Sivasankar, says that the arrears would cover 17 months from October 4, 2016 till May 25, 2018.
The government had increased Jereme's salary to Rs One lakh per month, which was earlier Rs 50,000, based on her request. She was drawing a salary of Rs 50,000 during this period. She had written to the government to pay her pending arrears for the period from her appointment as the chairperson till the date the special rules came into force on May 25, 2018.
The finance department had earlier refused to honour Jerome's request. Subsequently, the sports and youth affairs department fixed the salary for the period till the special rules were framed . This order has been cancelled by the government in the latest order issued on Tuesday granting her the salary arrears. Finance department sources have raised concerns about the government’s decision, as a similar demand from others who are heading several other organisations citing the case of Chintha Jerome would cause a huge burden on the exchequer.
