Punjab and Haryana HC grants bail to Lok Insaf Party chief in rape case
LUDHIANA: Lok Insaf Party (LIP) chief and former MLA Simarjit Bains on Wednesday got bail from Punjab and Haryana High court in a rape case.
A 44-year-old woman had alleged that she was raped by Bain several times between April 2020 and October 2020 on the pretext of her helping her in a property dispute.
On July 10, 2021, the police had registered an FIR against Bains, his brothers Karamjit Singh, Paramjit Singh Pamma, workers Baljinder Kaur, Jasbir Kaur Bhabhi, Sukhchain Singh and PA Gopi Sharma.
The court while granting bail to Simarjit Bains held that the possibility of the accused influencing the investigation, tampering with evidence, intimidating witnesses, and likelihood of fleeing justice, can be taken care of by imposing elaborative and stringent conditions.
(The victim's identity has not been revealed to protect her privacy as per Supreme Court directives on cases related to sexual assault)
