Tanneries closed till January 26 for Basant Panchami snan at Magh Mela
Kanpur: All the tanneries and water polluting industrial units of Kanpur city have been ordered to stop operations from Sunday midnight, January 23 till January 26 in view of the holy bath in the Ganga on the occasion of Basant Panchami during Magh Mela in Prayagraj.
Similarly, these units will remain closed for Maghi Purnima too from February 2 to 5 and from February 15 to 18 for holy bath on Mahashivaratri.
Regional officer of Pollution Control Board Amit Mishra said that nine teams have been formed at the district level to monitor the closure of tanneries. The teams are conducting surprise inspections and seal any tannery found violating the orders. Due to upcoming bathing days of Magh Mela, more than 400 tanneries and more than 300 industries of the city will remain closed completely. According to the officials of the Pollution Control Board, orders have already been issued to all the concerned industries.
The officials said that if any industry is found violating the norms, wherein garbage and filth is released in the Ganga, then that industry will be immediately shut down.
To recall, a specially constituted team led by ACM VI Vanya Singh and regional officer Pollution control board had, on January 13, visited M/S Yaseen Tanners Jajmau and M/S Junaid Tanning industries Eidgah road Jajmau, and found both the units operational. Both the tanneries have violated the roster issued by the district magistrate in view of the Magh Mela holy baths. They had clandestinely achieved power connections and produced the products.
