A S Korean miracle on the Indian soil
Bhubaneswar: Kalinga Stadium’s blue turf was painted red on Monday as South Korea shocked Argentina 3-2 via shootouts after the match ended 5-5 at the end of 60 minutes in the last crossover game of the World Cup here on Monday.
Not only did they become the lowest-ranked team in the quarterfinals, where they will face off against the Netherlands on Wednesday, but they are also the only team from Asia still in contention for the title. Converting four of their seven penalty corners in the match — with two of them coming in the last quarter — South Korea showed exemplary fighting spirit to take the game into the shootouts where goalkeeper Jaehyeon Kim put up a show to remember.
He saved the first two shots to give Korea a handy lead. However, Argentina crawled back as their goalkeeper Tomas Santiago made a save and Nicolas Keenan also scored. But with the score reading 3-2 for Korea and only one shot left for each team, Martin Ferreiro had to score to keep Argentina in the game.
Kim, however, managed to do just enough as Ferreiro ran out of time and Korea won 3-2.
After that, it was like somebody had just burst a balloon full of red confetti inside the stadium as the Korean players ran towards Kim who was going berserk with what he had achieved. The home crowd — that had to endure India’s loss a night back — revelled in the success of their fellow Asians.
Besides Kim, Korea’s Jonghyun Jang also had a brilliant game as he scored two goals – both from penalty corners with one of them coming in the 50th minute. The Argentine players, meanwhile, were heartbroken and they will now be playing the classification matches in Rourkela.
Easy win for Germany:
Earlier in the day, Germany eased to victory against France in their crossover tie, to make the quarterfinals.Having scored seven goals in their last game, Germany had no trouble against their European counterparts as they earned a 5-1 win in front of a sparse crowd and will now face off against England in the last-eight stage on Wednesday.
