NEW DELHI: Two weeks after a Delhi Police ASI succumbed to injuries on being stabbed by a snatcher in Mayapuri, a 34-year-old head constable was stabbed by a history-sheeter in the southwest Delhi’s Chhawla on Sunday evening. The attack left him critically injured.
Police claimed to have arrested three persons, including the main accused, following a brief encounter that left him injured.
ASI Sunil and Rinku were on motorcycle patrol duty in Qutub Vihar when they were alerted about a group of men quarrelling with an auto driver. The cops rushed to the spot and Rinku caught Sunny alias Shooter, one of the men. Sunny stabbed the cop twice and fled.
“Residents and shopkeepers in the area informed them about a group of men quarrelling with an autorickshaw driver. Later they also received a PCR call around 8:35 p.m. regarding the incident, "deputy commissioner of police (Dwarka) M. Harsha Vardhan said.
The patrolling staff rushed to the spot and found that some boys were arguing with an auto driver. The auto driver told the cops that the accused were abusing him unnecessarily.
"Staff pursued the boys, and Rinku caught one of them, who was identified as Sunny alias Shooter. He stabbed Rinku twice and escaped," the DCP said, adding that the head constable was shifted to the hospital by people. "He had received a deep cut on the ribs, and the knife pierced the left lung," the officer said.
A case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in discharge of public functions), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 307 (attempt to murder) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC.
Police said teams were formed to nab Sunny and his associates. "Based on secret information, a raid was conducted at a house on Bhai-Bhai Road in Qutub Vihar around 2:30 am. Sunny fired at the team, and in self-defense, the police team also fired three rounds. Sunny was hit by two bullets on his legs," the police said, adding that they have arrested three people in the case.
Police said they are conducting raids to arrest other accused. One country made a pistol with three live cartridges, and a knife was recovered from the accused. Later, Delhi Police Commissioner Sanjay Arora went to meet him at the hospital.
DCP said the victim is a native of Rajasthan and joined the Delhi Police as a constable in 2010. He lives in the Uttam Nagar area with his wife and three children. His condition is improving. "He is very brave and was rewarded three times. During patrolling, he has caught several criminals," another officer said.
The accused shooter is a bad character at the Chhawla police station. He was involved in a half-dozen criminal cases, including robbery, use of firearms. "He was arrested in 2021. He came out of jail less than a month ago," the officer said. According to the police, he had arguments with a chemist in the area before arguing with the autorickshaw. "We suspect that he was drunk, but we are waiting for a medical report," police said.
