Delhi MCD Mayor Election Updates: The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) House was adjourned on Tuesday without electing a mayor and deputy mayor amid a ruckus by some councillors. After the oath of aldermen and elected councillors, the House was adjourned for 15 minutes during which a number of BJP councillors started moving into the House, chanted “Modi, Modi”, and raised slogans against AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal.
They went towards the benches where AAP councillors were sitting and raised slogans, prompting the presiding officer to adjourn the House until a further date. Read More

The House was adjourned before the mayoral election began due to a brawl between two councillors.

The Lt Governor-nominated members took oath first despite opposition from AAP councillors as the municipal House in Delhi reconvened on Tuesday amid heavy deployment of civil defence volunteers personnel and marshals.
Presiding Officer Satya Sharma administered the oath to the nominated members before the elected representatives as AAP members raised “shame shame” chants. AAP councillor Mukesh Goyal also objected to the nominated members being administered their oaths first, as per PTI. The nominated members raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” after the ceremony.
The oath-taking ceremony is underway at the Civic Centre. Once it concludes, voting for the mayoral election will begin.
AAP MLAs raised objections as nominated members began taking oath, saying that elected members should take oath first. As nominated aldermen started taking the oath, AAP members shouted slogans.
Four unidentified persons impersonated ED officers and raided a businessman’s office in Mumbai’s Zaveri Bazaar area. They took Rs 25 lakhs cash and 3 kg gold worth Rs 1.70 crores from the office. Authorities have stepped up security inside the municipal House and on the Civic Centre premises for the mayoral poll, scheduled to begin shortly.
AAP MLA Saurabh Bharadwaj shared a video of heavy security deployment at the civic centre and asked if the BJP was planning to take over the Municipal Corporation. “Today BJP has brought force with sticks to take possession of Municipal Corporation. Have you seen this in any House?” he wrote in a tweet in Hindi.

The new 250-member MCD House reconvened on Tuesday with members nominated by the lieutenant governor taking an oath before the elected representatives amid cries of “shame, shame” from AAP councillors. The nominated members raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” and “Bharat Mata ki Jai” after the ceremony.
A few councillors from both parties then entered into a heated exchange on one of the aisles of the House.
Presiding Officer Satya Sharma said, “A House cannot run like this…House is adjourned till next date.”
“Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed outside the House as part of security measures,” the official said. Following the mayoral poll, Delhi will get a mayor for the city as a whole after a 10-year gap.
BJP councillor Satya Sharma, who was appointed as the presiding officer, had earlier in the day said all preparations for the second house have been done.
Meanwhile, Delhi Congress President Anil Chaudhary has written to the leader of the Congress in MCD and other councillors stating that they can attend the House for the oath-taking ceremony but no municipal councillor will take part in the voting of the mayor, deputy mayor and the standing committee.
Shelly Oberoi and Ashu Thakur are AAP’s candidates for the mayoral post, with Oberoi said to have a stronger claim to the post while the BJP has nominated Rekha Gupta as its contender for the post. The nominees for the post of deputy mayor are Aaley Mohammad Iqbal and Jalaj Kumar of the AAP, and Kamal Bagri of BJP. Six members of the MCD’s standing committee will also be elected during the January 24 municipal House.

A sessions court in Mumbai on Monday granted pre-arrest bail to former Maharashtra cabinet minister Nawab Malik’s son Faraz and French daughter-in-law Laura Hemelin alias Ayesha in connection with a case of submission of alleged forged documents to extend her visa.
The suburban Kurla police had registered a complaint of cheating and forgery against the duo last week. According to the police, Hemelin, a French national, had submitted forged documents while applying to convert her tourist visa into a long-term visa.
The duo has denied the criminal charges and claimed to be victims of fraud at the hands of an agent who they had appointed to obtain a marriage certificate, which is at the centre of the case. The couple has said the agent had cheated 18 other people.
Meanwhile, the city reported four new Covid-19 cases on Monday, which took the overall tally to 11,55,240, while the death toll remained unchanged at 19,747, a civic official said.
