UT architects pay tributes to architect Doshi, who worked with Corbusier
CHANDIGARH: Condoling the death of celebrated Indian architect BV Doshi, who had worked with Le Corbusier, on Tuesday, Chandigarh chief architect Kapil Setia said that having worked under Corbusier, Doshi also contributed to the planning of Chandigarh and his architectural work as well as his zeal and enthusiasm will always be remembered.
Doshi passed away at 95 on Tuesday. The officers and staff of the UT department of urban planning paid tribute to Doshi and held a two minute silence as a mark of respect to the departed soul, who contributed immensely to the built environment.
“He was known worldwide for his contribution to Modern Architecture through his designs for many famous buildings and campuses in India, the most noteworthy among them being IIM Bangalore , Vidyadhar Nagar, Jaipur and NIFT Delhi. A pioneer of modern and brutalist architecture in India, he was a highly decorated figure having received the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan and many other awards,” said Setia.
“Doshi brought pride to the architectural fraternity of India by becoming the first Indian architect to be awarded the prestigious Pritzker Prize in 2018. Apart from architecture, he also worked on urbanism, academics, urban design as well as Arts, the Hussain-Doshi Gufa in Ahmedabad being a famous example of the culmination of art with architecture,” added Setia.
For his outstanding contribution to the field of architecture, Doshi was conferred with Pritzker Prize in 2018, RIBA’s Royal Gold Medal in 2021, and the coveted Padma Shri in 1976.
