Bailancho Ekvott seeks strict action against child trafficking
Margao: Bailancho Ekvott has requested the state to take strict action to prevent child trafficking, in the wake of the recent episode at Margao railway station. “We believe this is not a solitary case and children are often trafficked to Goa for adoption, begging and other anti-social and illegal activities,” the president of Bailancho Ekvott, Auda Viegas said. “We request the state to take strict action against anyone involved in the sale of babies given for adoption and those who do not follow the guidelines mandated by Central Adoption Resource Authority (CARA).”
The NGO added that curbs are missing on begging, children doing acrobatics for alms and begging at traffic signals. It went on to say that marketplaces and beaches are spots where infants could be sold. “The trafficking of women and children is a malaise that requires action by child protection authorities in the state,” the NGO stated.
Viegas said that Goa is becoming a convenient place to abandon babies and for minor girls to deliver babies.
