Pre-budget sector watch: Telecom

The year 2023 is expected to be one of the peak investment years for telcos as they set up infrastructure for their 5G services across the country. While Vodafone Idea is yet to announce its 5G play, both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio began the phased rollout of their 5G services late last year.

The year 2023 is expected to be one of the peak investment years for telcos as they set up infrastructure for their 5G services across the country. While Vodafone Idea is yet to announce its 5G play, both Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio began the phased rollout of their 5G services late last year. This means high spending on network infrastructure in addition to the annual spectrum cost. Telcos are likely to look at improving their top-line through tariff hikes for 2G and 4G prepaid services.

Budget Demands
General
  • Exemption from USOF contribution of 5% of AGR till the existing USO corpus is exhausted
  • Reduction in license fee from 3% of AGR to 1% of AGR
  • Clarification of the term 'telecom activities' while calculating Gross Revenue
