Silchar: A 31-year-old woman drowned while washing clothes in Katakhal river in Assam’s Hailakandi district on Saturday.
The incident took place at Basdahar area under the Bandukmara police outpost.
The deceased, identified by police as Babli Rani Nath, was a resident of Basdahar. She is survived by five children and husband, Tapan Nath. He was not at home at the time of the incident, sources said.
Locals found Babli’s body floating in the river and immediately informed police. Following this, Bandukmara police outpost in-charge, Noor Ahmed Barbhuiya, along with SDRF personnel rushed to the spot after which the body was fished out and sent to Hailakandi civil hospital for post-mortem. It was later handed over to the family members in the evening, the sources said.
In another incident, a youth drowned in the same river in Bandukmara on Saturday.
The deceased, Isamtulla Laskar, was a resident of Bandukmara. Family members said Isamtulla had gone to the river to take a bath in the afternoon. His body was later found floating in the river.
The body was later sent to Hailakandi civil hospital for autopsy, family members said.
