AHMEDABAD: A domestic altercation left a 37-year-old woman dead, her husband injured and her house on fire at Godrej Garden City in Chandkheda early on Friday. The wife had allegedly served cold bread to her husband for breakfast, sparking the fight. The couple was identified as Anil Baghel, an executive engineer with a Korean firm, and his wife, Anita, who worked as a designer with a tiles manufacturing firm till two months ago.

The couple was identified as Anil Baghel, a 38-year-old executive e ngineer with a Korean firm, and his wife, Anita, who worked as a designer with a tiles manufacturing firm till two months ago. Their children – a son, 13, and daughter, 11, who were in school at the time of the tragedy – have been given in the care of their maternal aunt.
Police said they have registered a case of accidental death and are probing if Anita was murde red. The fight between the couple took place around 8. 40am, said neighbours in V Block of Eden Scheme at the township. They heard Anil shouting for help and running outof his house while bleeding f rom his chest, hands, and stomach. ACP D V Rana of L Division of the city police said, “Anil told a neighbour that Anita had attacked himwith a knife, stabbed herself, then set the house on fire. W hen neighbours tried to open the door of their house, it was locked from the inside. They called a security guard who broke the door and helped Anita, who was severely bleeding, out of the house that was ablaze by then. ”
Some locals called the police and fire brigade, who doused the fire in an hour.
“Anita later died of deep wounds to her throat, wrists, chest, and stomach,” said Rana, adding, “Her husband told cops that his wife had given him cold bread for breakfast. When he expressed his disapproval, his wife took offen ce and attacked him with a knife. When he pushed her aside, she stabbed herself multiple times. She removed the PNG pipe and began clicking the gas lighter to spark a fire. Anil said he tried to stop her from setting off a fire but was unsuccessful. ”
An officer of the Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Services (AFES) said nine vehicles and 30 fire brigade personnel doused the fire. “I did not notice major burns on the woman’s body,” said an AFES officer.
