AHMEDABAD: Ankit Rawal, employed with a private company in Gujarat, was knocked dead by a speeding truck while talking on the phone near Asola Phata at Dewulgaon Raja in Buldhana district on Samruddhi Mahamarg in the early hours of Friday.
Rawal and 10-12 other passengers of an Aurangabad-bound private luxury travels bus had escaped unhurt after their vehicle toppled while trying to overtake two trucks and being forced to brake suddenly, according to police. The bus fell on to its side.
Rawal helped the other passengers come out of the bus. He was telling family members about the accident on the phone when he loitered on to the other side of the median and got hit by the truck.
According to assistant police inspector Dattatreya Waghmare of Dewulgaon Raja police station, Rawal is likely to have not seen the truck. "The truck was heading to Nagpur from Nashik with a consignment of onions. The driver saw the accident and people on the road but Rawal was on the other side which the trucker failed to see," said Waghmare.
The bus, which had gone to Nagpur from Aurangabad on a wedding booking, had picked up a few passengers on its return journey. Apart from Rawal, two members of the rescue team of the e-way were also nearly mowed down by the same truck as the driver tried to control its speed. Police said the injured were rushed to hospitals at Jalgaon and Sindhkhed Raja. "One of the two bus drivers and a conductor suffered some injuries," said Waghmare, adding that an offence has been registered against the bus driver and the trucker.tnn
