COIMBATORE: A 65-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack in Periyanaickenpalayam range while another suffered severe injuries in a similar incident at a different place on Thursday in Coimbatore.
Forest officials said N Mayilsamy, 65, from Thirumalur village near Naickenpalayam in Periyanaickenpalayam forest range, was walking through a bushy spot when the lone tusker attacked him. Villagers informed the forest officials who rushed to the spot and chased the elephant into the forest. The body was sent to the Coimbatore medical college hospital for a postmortem. Later, forest officials met the family of the deceased and offered condolences. They also urged the villagers to exercise caution while moving near forest fringes.
Earlier in the day, a villager identified as Soundarajan was attacked by an elephant near Govanur. He suffered multiple fractures and has been admitted to a private hospital.
