Jaipur: A 28-year-old resident of Sujangarh in Churu who was suffering from cardiomyopathy, a disease in which patient’s heart find difficulty in pumping the blood for supplying to the rest of the body, received a heart of a 22-year-old in a surgery performed at SMS Hospital on Thursday.
The donor, Ashok Saini, who was declared brain dead after meeting with an accident and got admitted to Manipal Hospital on January 11.
The donor was a resident of Sikar, who was diagnosed with severe brain injury. At the hospital, the team of doctors performed a brain surgery following which he was shifted to ICU and kept on ventilator support. Since he did not revive, on January 18, a hospital’s committee on brain deaths declared him brain dead even after sustained efforts by the team of doctors.
The organ transplant counsellors encouraged the family to donate his organ, following which, the family gave consent for donating his heart, liver, and two kidneys.
“His heart was functioning just 15% of his capacity and unable to supply the blood to the body properly as he was suffering from cardiomyopathy. His could not survive longer. He is fortunate enough that he has received heart of a 22-year-old donor. Post heart transplant, we have kept in post-operative care,” said Dr Rajkumar Yadav, senior professor, cardiothoracic vascular surgery, SMS Hospital.
