PANAJI: After opposition leader Yuri Alemao complained that pollution is being caused by fish meal plants at Cuncolim industrial estate, chief minister Pramod Sawant said pollution control board officials were sent for inspection and appropriate action will be taken.
Raising the issue during Question Hour, Alemao sought an assurance from the chief minister that there will be an immediate against the polluting units.
Sawant said permission for the plant was given in 2011, and it started operation in 2012. Stating that the problem was also noticed then, he said, the effluent treatment plant (ETP) was made operational, yet some tried to release waste through borewells and action was taken against three. The CM said the polluting fish meal plants will be asked to shut if they do not operationalise their ETPs. tnn
