8-year-old mendicant
SURAT: Over 30,000 people gathered as early as 4am on Wednesday at the huge pavilion in Vesu to witness the diksha ceremony of Devanshi, the 8-year-old daughter of diamond baron Dhanesh Sanghvi.
Bedecked in jewellery and fineries, Devanshi shed her worldly attire at the ceremony to don white and accept monkhood under the moniker Sadhvi Shree Digantpragyashreeji.
Her Diksha was approved by Jainacharya Kirtiyashsuriswarji Maharaj
The event also became a centre of attraction for many as she hailed from one of the oldest billionaire daimantaire families in the city.
Sanghvi family is considered as the pioneers of diamond trading and manufacturing in the city.
For the event, preparations had started months ago and various events were being organized at the pandal for the past three days.
During the event Uchhamani was offered for various things that she has adopted as a monk.
“Starting from Tilak, her clothes, books, mat and other basic things. Devotees donate money offered for these things and the money will go for welfare and religious use,” said a devotee.
