Clearing NET in specific category makes person eligible in gen pool: HC
Chandigarh: The Punjab and Haryana high court has made it clear that a person who has cleared the National Eligibility Test (NET) - a qualifying examination to become eligible for teaching in colleges/universities - in a different category, is fully eligible for recruitment under the general category.
The HC passed these orders while quashing the decision of Haryana Public Service Commission (HPSC) that had rejected the candidature of a person who had cleared NET under the general (EWS) category but appeared for the post of assistant professor (mathematics) in the HPSC examination as a general category candidate.

“There is no rider in the advertisement that a candidate who has cleared the NET under the general (EWS) category, is not eligible to compete for the post meant for general category. Once the petitioner fulfilled the academic criteria in the advertisement for applying to the post under the open category, he could not have been denied appointment for the post meant for the open category,” Justice Harnaresh Singh Gill held while allowing a plea filed by Ravish, a resident of Haryana.
The HC also ordered the commission to offer an appointment letter to the petitioner, who was otherwise eligible for the post and had qualified the examinations, against the post in applied science (maths), under the general category.
