14 held for selling liquor on dry day

Coimbatore: The city police arrested 14 people and seized 192 liquor bottles that were meant to be sold illegally on Monday, which was observed as a dry day on occasion of Thiruvalluvar Day.
Police seized the liquor bottles from 14 different parts of the city.
A police officer said a city-wide check was conducted to prevent illegal sales of liquor on Monday. Police personnel, along with teams from the prohibition enforcement wing, were deployed to conduct checks.
The prohibition enforcement wing teams registered nine cases and arrested nine people, while the Kattoor and Podanur police registered two and three cases respectively.
The officer said bootleggers had hoarded liquor bottles well in advance and were involved in selling them at exorbitant prices on Monday. A few were regular offenders, while others were caught for the first time. All of them were released on station bail later. tnn
