The J&K Police on Tuesday said that two Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists were killed at the checkpoint in Budgam district of central Kashmir. They have been identified as Arbaaz Mir and Shahid Sheikh of Pulwama who had managed to escape an encounter site recently, police officials said.
Police said that following a tip-off, a joint party of the police and Army tried to stop a suspected vehicle during which the terrorists opened fire, triggering an exchange of fire in which the two militants were killed.
"They were tasked to carry out some terror incident in Budgam district ahead of the Republic Day," read the police statement on the incident. The police official said an AK-47 rifle and a pistol were recovered from the site.
DGP Dilbag Singh said adequate security measures to ensure peaceful Republic Day celebrations have been made across the Union Territory.
