GURUGRAM: With the arrest of a 32-year-old man on Monday, the crime branch of Sector 17 has claimed to have cracked the case, in which a city-based businessman and a resident of Sector 14, was threatened with life if he had not paid Rs 1 crore ransom.
The extortion letter was sent to him in the name of a member of Neeraj Bawana gang. ACP (crime) Preet Pal Sangwan said the accused Sandeep Tyagi was the former driver of the businessman and knew about his owner. He has no links with Neeraj Bawana gang.
The businessman filed a complaint on Thursday in which he told police that around 10.40am, his driver provided the newspaper to him in which an envelope was hidden. The envelope was addressed to him and had a warning title. In the letter, the miscreant mentioned himself as Pehelwan of the Neeraj Bawana gang and demanded Rs 1 crore from him and threatened him that if he fails to provide the money he will be killed.
The accused was booked under IPC Section 386 (extortion by putting a person in fear of death or grievous hurt) at the Sector 14 police station.
“On Sunday, the crime branch received a tip-off and laid a trap and arrested Tyagi from IFFCO Chowk. During questioning, it was ascertained that the accused was a former driver of the complainant and knew about his background and family. He had left the job in May last year,” Sangwan added.
