The Supreme Court on Monday refused to entertain a plea seeking the top court's intervention into the sinking of land in Uttarakhand's Joshimath. Refusing to intervene in the matter, a bench of Chief Justice of India D Y Chandrachud and justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala observed that the Uttarakhand High Court is already cognisant of the matter.

The bench asked the petitioner, Swami Avimukteshwaranand Saraswati, to approach the high court with his petition. "We don't want anyone to use these proceedings only for sound bytes for social media," the CJI verbally observed. The petitioner had sought the court's intervention to ensure immediate compensation and financial assistance to the residents of Joshimath. The Joshimath area has been declared disaster prone after cracks started appearing in buildings and on roads.
