Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation brainstorms on illegal roadside parking
Vehicles parked by the side of the road blocking footpaths
BHUBANESWAR: In a bid to ensure smooth traffic flow and proper cleaning of roads, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has shifted its focus on haphazard parking of cars and other vehicles on different city roads.
The civic body in its grievance and social justice committee meeting recently discussed the issue of haphazard parking of cars by the owners on the streets that not only leads to problems for the sweepers in cleaning the roads in the morning but also causes traffic problems.
"We are working on various ideas to solve the on-street parking issue. Often several car owners, in the absence of their own parking space, park their vehicles on roads that creates several problems for several people," ward 51 corporator Bijayini Jena and Chairperson of the Committee, said.
She said in the last committee meeting, they discussed the problem in detail and decided that they will seek the help of deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Bhubaneswar and request him to enforce the rules effectively and strictly.
Haphazard and illegal parking of vehicles is a major issue not only on the arterial roads but also lanes in many residential areas. A few major roads, including Janpath and Rajpath have on-street parking facility. However, the facility is not available in many other roads of the city.
"In the absence of the parking space, people park their vehicles by the side of the road often blocking the footpaths, cycle tracks and sometimes the roadways. In the residential areas, the problem persists in the absence of car parking spaces in the owners houses.
