Noida: The Noida police arrested a man on Saturday night for allegedly smuggling 750 cartons of illicit liquor worth about Rs 45 lakh. The liquor bottles, marked for Arunachal Pradesh, were being transported from Chandigarh. The police have also detained 116 people for drinking in the open.
Based on a tip-off, the police and excise department officials had set up a check post near the Bahlolpur flyover when the container with a Punjab registration number approached. When the driver saw the checkpost, he tried to flee but was caught by the police and the container was checked.
“We found that he was carrying Blue Stroke Exclusive whiskey marked for sale in Arunachal Pradesh. We seized 750 cartons of whiskey worth around Rs 45 lakh. He said he was taking the liquor from Chandigarh to Arunachal Pradesh. However, Noida does not come on that route. So, we nabbed him. We are trying to know where the alcohol cartons were supposed to be dropped,” said ADCP (central Noida) Vishal Pandey.
The driver Satnam Singh has been identified as a resident of Patiala. He has been booked under sections of the Excise Act at Sector 63 police station.
Meanwhile, police also detained 116 people for drinking in public on Saturday night. Additionally, 10 people were arrested from Sector Gamma 2 for creating a nuisance after drinking.
Police said the men were fighting with their landlord who was asking them to not consume alcohol. The accused have been identified as Saurabh Rai, Himanshu Agrahari, Ankit Singh, Madhav Mishra, Ayush Ranjan, Jeet Rawat, Rishabh Kumar Jha, Balraj, Ayush and Sanjeev Kumar, all residents of various parts of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
