C’garh team in city to study waste handling
Bhubaneswar: The mayor of Jagdalpur in Chhattisgarh and 13 other officials of its civic body visited the city on Saturday to learn about the process of handling municipal solid waste through community participation by Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation in a bid to adopt them.
The BMC’s solid waste processing and compost plants have attracted officials of several civic bodies to visit the city and learn about these practices. In November, Jammu mayor Rajendra Sharma visited the city to learn about the decentralised system of waste collection with a view to adopt it.
Jagdalpur mayor Safira Sahu, Jagdalpur Nagar Nigam commissioner Dinesh Nag and other officials visited the temporary transit station (TTS), where a material recovery facility (MRF) is located. The Jagdalpur civic body is keen to set up an MRF, where dry waste is segregated. The civic body has recently started the system of decentralised waste collection and processing whereas BMC has been doing it for past three years earning accolades from several forums, including Niti Aayog.
The team also visited a wealth centre, where both an MRF and micro composting centre (MCC) are located to see how wet waste is reduced to compost, which is sold to fetch revenue.
“We have started work on an MRF, which we need to learn from cities where they are already present. We came to know that Bhubaneswar is doing better is decentralised waste management. We have 11 units where wet waste is processed. But we want to build more such units,” Sahu told TOI.
