Not cleared NEET? This gang in Noida charged Rs 25 lakh for MBBS seats

NOIDA: Police have arrested two men for allegedly duping MBBS aspirants by promising them admissions to government and private medical colleges across the country.
Deepak Kumar and Rajesh Kumar, both residents of Gautam Budh Nagar, police said, were part of a gang that tricked several students who failed to crack the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET). The gang charged Rs 25-35 lakh each for "fake admissions" to medical colleges.
DCP (Noida) Harish Chander told TOI that the gang would target medical aspirants who had failed or did not do well in the NEET exam.
"To gain the trust of the medical aspirants, the gang would book the victim's travel tickets to go to the college in which they were seeking admission. Upon reaching there, a fake consultant would meet the student and also make them meet a man posing as an official of the college," he said.
After taking money, the accused would give their victims fake admission letters before shutting their office and discarding their mobile phone numbers, he said, adding that Noida was the fourth city after Delhi, Kanpur and Lucknow, where the gang had opened their office.
Police swung into action after a 26-year-old Lucknow-based MBBS aspirant filed a complaint at the Sector 126 police station, alleging that she was duped of nearly Rs 14 lakh.
"We got the complaint on January 3, and an FIR for cheating and criminal breach of trust was subsequently registered. A team, under the direct supervision of ACP-1 (Noida) Rajneesh Verma, was formed to nab the accused," the DCP said. The duo was traced via electronic and manual surveillance and nabbed on Friday from Hajipur underpass in Sector 100, Noida, police said. Eight Aadhaar cards, nine SIM cards, among other items, have been seized from the possession of the accused. The two were produced in a court and sent to judicial custody.
The accused told the cops that they would use one SIM card to connect with one victim and destroy it once the work was done. "Moreover, the gang members would not stay in their rented office beyond 2-3 months. They operated in Noida from October to November 2022," ACP Verma said.
Police said they have so far been able to trace six-seven victims of the fraud. "A third suspect, identified as Yash Choubey, who also goes by multiple pseudonyms like Jai Mehta, Yashwant Chaubey and Yash Chaturvedi, is currently absconding and his photo is being circulated," he added.
